GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant from GitHub. It is available in editors, on github.com and as a terminal tool (Copilot CLI).

Copilot CLI

• Terminal assistant that reads, edits and runs code using natural-language prompts.
• Can run shell commands, search code, use GitHub via the gh CLI and call MCP servers.

Custom instructions

• Repository: '.github/copilot-instructions.md'
• Path-specific: '.github/instructions/*.instructions.md'
• Agents: 'AGENTS.md'
• User level: '$HOME/.copilot/copilot-instructions.md'

MCP

Model Context Protocol servers extend Copilot with external tools, for example the MediaWiki MCP servers (t230 and ilianko.com).
